Welcome to my AWS Cloud Substack
Fresh AWS Content and Real World Practical Advice that is Simplified
Welcome to my new substack. Over the last few years I’ve attempted to use a different number of channels for publishing content, including my own website built on Wordpress, blog sites, medium and LinkedIn.
What I have found is that each platform has it’s benefits, but more recently decided that these platforms either require a lot of maintenance or are filled with advertising that no one wants.
I wanted to provide value to my audience and readers and have come to a realisation that what I have to offer could be valuable to a subset of my followers and connections.
1. Whats the reason I’m focussing on Simplifying AWS?
I’ve blogged and authored content on a number of different topics including cloud, software, strategy, startups and tech in general.
Recently, I have come to realise that there are several other authors out there that provide excellent content and discussion on all these topics. Even on AWS there are plenty of community groups and articles you can find on becoming an AWS engineer, developer or whatever your heart desires.
I’m focussing on making AWS more simple so leaders and teams can make a lot better decisions when it comes to cloud. This includes how to build a cloud road map, improve security, improve your technical understanding and focus on delivering value each day.
2. Focussed on small teams, business owners and small-medium business
The biggest gap I see in the Cloud space is having straight forward advice and content that is geared and aimed towards small tech teams and their leaders, in addition to small and medium business.
From about 2015 I started seeing that AWS was complex and that cloud migrations lead to complexity in operations. I responded with this by spreading this idea the best way to get value out of cloud is through Simplification. Initially this was met with quite a bit of resistance when I asked people for feedback on my approach as I was told that “Cloud is not complex, it is just the organisations that make it complex”.
While it is true that a lot of organisations make cloud complex, a lot of the advice that was provided in the early days from both the cloud providers and consultants was provided inside a “Cloud Bubble”. Context is almost everything in business when it comes to decision making and this is true of investing and utilising cloud services such as AWS. Trust me, I was caught in the “Cloud Bubble” and every problem I saw could only be solve by specific cloud solutions.
Now that I’ve stepped up and out of that bubble, you could say I’ve “popped” the bubble - I can see a lot clearer.
3. A blend of regular technical and non-technical content
If you’ve got this far, you’re doing well. Thanks for still reading! Hopefully you’re nodding your head in agreement with the above points and find it interesting. If that is the case, I would appreciate you considering reading a bit further and subscribing to my newsletter :)
I already have a number of articles I have prepared with the goal to release new content every week in article format including guides to how to solve specific problems. For example I am currently writing an in-depth article based on a recent security issue that has been found in the cloud community. This will be aimed at both business and technical folk.
4. Community Resources
I also want people to get value from a community that encourages them in their Cloud Journey. Whether you’re a leader, technical team member or business owner using cloud I want to make sure you can meet other people that are on a similar journey.
Because with community you get access to each other’s knowledge and experience as well as opportunity to share insights.
In addition to this I have several resources you can use for Cloud including monitoring, architecture, innovating, cloud strategy and more.
